WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Alex Avila has caught 187 different pitchers in 902 regular season games since his 2009 major league debut. That s naturally turned his brain into a dusty filing cabinet of the most minute details. At one point, about 10 years ago, it was consumed by Justin Verlander s curve or Aníbal Sánchez s change-up. In recent seasons, he calculated the best ways for Zack Greinke or Archie Bradley to use their fastballs.
And along the way, in stints with the Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks, he stored tons of information on Max Scherzer and Patrick Corbin that could now serve him and the Washington Nationals well. Avila is the team s new backup catcher after signing a one-year, $1.5 million contract in late January. He is expected to start a maximum of two times per week to spell Yan Gome ....

Just days into spring training, and with some holes on the edges of their roster, the Washington Nationals have added veteran reliever Jeremy Jeffress on a minor league contract. Jeffress, 33, is coming off a strong season with the Chicago Cubs that still didn t yield a guaranteed deal for 2021. But he now leads a group of pitchers who could crack the Nationals roster and head north for Opening Day.
On Monday afternoon, Manager Dave Martinez confirmed that the Nationals had reached an agreement with Jeffress. Martinez added that Jeffress now has to pass coronavirus intake screening and a standard physical. Jeffress will earn $1.25 million plus potential incentives if he pitches in the majors for Washington, according to a person with knowledge of the terms. MLB.com was first to report the signing. ....

Spring training is here at last, but baseball can t yet shake its uncertainties. In that way, the sport is just like the rest of the world. There s uncertainty about whether a fresh set of health and safety protocols will work. There s uncertainty about the coming season. Then there s uncertainty about what, exactly, to be uncertain about.
But in West Palm Beach, Fla., at the Washington Nationals facility, roster uncertainty - a blip amid MLB s second attempt to play through the coronavirus pandemic - only touches the fringes of a ready-made club. That s not to say there aren t pressing on-field questions heading into camp. There certainly are. It s important, though, to distingui ....

Inclement weather forced ALDOT to modify
its work schedule earlier this week; however, the contractor will be able to resume scheduled work after showers leave the area and should have the new arch placed by late afternoon today.
The arches are necessary, as they will hold the weight of the bridge over McFarland Boulevard and will allow the contractor to remove the underneath temporary support, ALDOT said in a press release announcing the scheduled work. The design will allow for more space on McFarland Boulevard where the single-point urban interchange will be constructed. The SPUI will improve travel time while also e ....

Stanley's Shots: Could a rebuild be on the horizon for the Predators?

By Robby Stanley
Feb 10, 2021 9:17 PM
Things couldn’t be going a whole lot worse for the Nashville Predators than they are right now. The team is 5-8-0 to begin the season and if not for a dramatic comeback (and a gift from Joel Quenneville and the Florida Panthers coaching staff), the Predators could be in the midst of a six-game losing streak.
As it stands, the Predators have lost five of their past six games and you can sense some frustration starting to boil over. Here’s the latest edition of Stanley’s shots.
Where is the offense going to come from? ....
